The body of Swiss footballer Florijana Ismaili was found days after a swimming accident on Lake Como in Italy. The 24-year-old was reported missing on Saturday after jumping from a boat into the lake and not reappearing.
Italian rescue services reported that their body was found 204 feet down on Tuesday. “I’m deeply saddened and shocked, it’s hard to accept that Flori is gone,” said Swiss women’s boss Nils Nielsen.
Ismaili, who made her international debut in 2014, was captain of the BSC Young Boys. “We are very upset and deeply affected,” said her club.
She was cut 33 times by her country. Xherdan Shaqiri, the Swiss national player from Liverpool, said he was “deeply shocked” by the news.
National coach Nielsen added: “She always had a smile on her face and inspired us with her cheerful nature. She was someone who stood up to any challenge and gave the role model, I can only imagine what it must be like for everyone who does it knew Flori longer and closer than I. But my thoughts are with them in these difficult times. “
International team-mate Lia Walti, who plays for Arsenal at WSL, said: “Until the last moment, I had hoped for a miracle and wished in my heart that it would all be just a bad dream.
“The news hit me deeply and you can not find the right words at such a moment, I just hope Flori did not suffer.” Another teammate, Lara Dickenmann, said: “We are all incredibly sad and shocked, it is inconceivable that Flori is not with us anymore.”
“There was a star in the sky, we are very, very sad,” said the Swiss national coach of the men, Vladimir Petkovic.
